Guy Riordan points out that New Mexico offers pond, river and stream fishing with a large variety of types of fish.

“A fisherman can come to New Mexico and find salmon, catfish, crappie, walleyes, bass and much more,” states Guy Riordan. Additionally, says Guy Riordan, New Mexico offers great fly-fishing. “Take for example the San Juan River. It is one of the premiere fly fishing experiences in the country,” notes Guy Riordan. Fly-fishing, according to Guy Riordan, can be quite an enjoyable process, including the correct fly selection, tension and land net, among other things. “It is worth sitting with the many different San Juan or in general fly fishing experts if you are newer to fly fishing,” explains Guy Riordan. An individual with many years’ experience can teach a newcomer to fly fishing some very important tricks and techniques, asserts Guy Riordan. “I once read that our San Juan has an extreme learning curve in the art of fly fishing,” recalls Guy Riordan. “There is nothing I know of closer to the truth!” affirms Guy Riordan.

Guy Riordan once owned and managed a game preserve on the Rio Grande River and he says that the river offers amazing trout. It is not unusual, according to Guy Riordan, to see cuttbows with a weight over ten pounds. “As well, it is normal to see northerners that can range in the area of thirty to forty inches,” adds Guy Riordan. Compare that to the San Juan where the average trout ranges around seventeen to twenty inches. “The Rio Grande is a cold water body of water that offers, in addition to rainbow and brown trout, great northern pike and smallmouth bass,” reports Guy Riordan. While the rainbow trout are actually stocked in the Rio Grande, the brown trout along with the other two fish types mentioned are self sustained, according to Guy Riordan.

Whether fishing the San Juan, the Rio Grande or many of the other waterways in New Mexico, the right fishing guide can “make all the difference,” according to Guy Riordan. A fishing guide, familiar with the particular body of water, the needed bait and the best times of day and season to fish will “ensure your success in making big catches,” concludes Guy Riordan.
